According to a report in the August 2009 issue of ACR News, half of the companies in the air conditioning industry are currently breaking the law after failing to register for an F-Gas certificate - before the 4th July 2009 deadline.

REFCOM who are the government-approved F-Gas registration body have said they have received two thousand five hundred registrations so far, leaving an estimated two and half thousand businesses trading illegally.

From July 4 this year, it is illegal to carry out the installation or maintenance on air conditioning systems containing certain refrigerant gases - without a company certificate.

Criminal prosecutions:

If a company does not register, the local council can serve an enforcement notice or even a prohibition notice which may result in a piece of equipment or even a whole site being shut down. In addition, there could be criminal prosecutions and unlimited fines.

The unregistered firms could now face prosecution as well as other negative knock on effects, which may affect their business such as the validity of commercial insurance. A spokesperson for REFCOM said: “For the remaining companies that aren’t registered they should apply for a certificate and the sooner the better. Trading without a certificate means they are breaking the law.”

REFCOM chief executive Bruce Kirton said: “I would urge any business that has yet to apply to do so as soon as possible by visiting our new website at www.refcom.org.uk. Compliance is required by law and both gas suppliers and equipment manufacturers will expect all air conditioning businesses to be certified.”

Building on 20 years of experience, ACS Mechanical Services Limited has exceptional expertise in the creation, heating, cooling and maintenance of all environments, in industry, retail, commercial, and governmental premises.
As part of Air Conditioning Solutions (UK) Limited, their core business of designing, installing, and maintaining air conditioning, ventilation systems has generically expanded into allied products and the mechanical and electrical services sector.

Overview

Head Office: Towcester, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom
Other offices in North London, Southampton, Cardiff and Tyneside.
Products and Services: Design, Installation, service, maintenance and remote monitoring for air conditioning, ventilation systems, and M&E services.

Partners: All the major manufacturers of air conditioning and ventilation equipment available in the UK

Full national coverage
Experienced Employees: Long serving, highly qualified, experienced and continuously trained engineering team.
Founded in 1999
Equal opportunity employers
Members of the BM TRADA accredited member of the HVCA, Refcom, Gas Safe, Constructionline, BESCA and MPBA.
Accredited to BS EN ISO 9001:2000

Company History

When Managing Director, Mr David Knibbs, founded ACS in 1999 he was determined to set new standards in system design, installation and afterwards in supporting his company’s customers. The company has consistently achieved his objectives clearly demonstrated by the high level of customer retention from day one.

ACS has over 1600 installations benefiting from their excellent standards and with high customer retention it is no surprise this number is climbing daily.

Their UK head offices, on the outskirts of Towcester, Northamptonshire, are just minutes from both the major arterial motorways, providing the ideal location from which to react to the demands of this often business critical service. Offices have been opened in other locations to support this customer growth.

ACS Mechanical Services Limited is the latest element of this organic growth.

Customer Profile

ACS companies have a very diverse and happy customer profile, 35% of which are in the public sector. From single split installations in a doctor’s surgeries, to comfort cooling in a nationwide chain of retail premises, or to close control in business critical installations, ACS has supplied and maintains them all.

Service & Maintenance

Business critical installations are supported 24/7 by a dedicated service and support team.

Staff are qualified in essential and scheduled maintenance programs and licensed to handle all types of refrigerant gases, disposing of these in accordance with strict environmental guidelines. The company is Refcom registered and fully committed to its environmental policy, and therefore treats these responsibilities very seriously.

The service teams are satellite tracked, using the latest technology, and by providing an on screen mapped location the nearest team can contacted immediately to resolve any system issues
A complete history of every customer’s installation, and service history, is stored in their computer asset register and updated continuously from the field service reports the engineers complete. This asset system automatically generates job sheets for the service engineers, when scheduled service visits are due, and also provides trend information which can then be monitored and advised.

At each service visit the engineers compile their field service report, and this information is then added to the asset register. Service calls are tailored to meet the clients requirements and working restrictions. The engineers are trained to work quietly and cleanly ensuring minimal disturbance to a customer’s day to day business, if any.
For business critical areas, such as computer server rooms, ACS can respond to calls within four hours, depending on the service level agreed with the customer.

Remote Monitoring

Enhancing this support is our remote monitoring system. Whether the customer simply wants the control to be organised remotely or requires a totally monitored and controlled system ACS Mechanical Services can provide it.

All the individual controls can be connected by IP and/or SMS directly or through the clients BMS system. Temperature settings and timings can then be adjusted remotely. If local control is retained this can still be monitored and adjusted if needed.

With some systems SMS fault notification can be configured to report faults so that a remote adjustment or in more serious cases an engineer despatched without any local intervention by the customer. Similar systems can be installed in a central point locally for control by a single person if so desired.

Setting standards

Regular product training and attention to employee welfare, has produced a high level of staff retention. With this comes an ever enlarging knowledge base, and skill level, of which both ACS Mechanical Services and our engineers are justifiably proud

When “good enough” is not enough

As a full BM TRADA accredited member of the HVCA (Heating and Ventilating Contractors Association), ACS are required to demonstrate their engineering competence and have to undergo an independent inspection and assessment against technical and non-technical standards.

MISSION STATEMENT - Mr David Knibbs Managing Director

“Our mission is to become the leading supplier of products that will provide a safe and healthy working environment for our customers and secure future for our employees”.

Simple, concise and it works!

Customers

ACS Mechanical Services know the Customer is the most important factor in their success and will always ensure they receive the very best attention. Customers always receive their full commitment and they will find all ACS companies will always work hard towards exceeding their expectations on every occasion.

Quality

ACS Mechanical Services will always deliver services and goods of the utmost quality. They continue to keep aware of environmental issues, of industry standards and codes, in order to fulfil their obligation to their customer on a proactive basis. This is maintained though their BS EN ISO 9001:2000 accreditation

Health and Safety

The health and safety of our engineers, and customer’s staff, is paramount and we will do everything possible to ensure every job is run as safely as possible. ACS companies will work closely with the customer’s own H&S staff to ensure they comply not only with their own policies but those specifically applying to the customer’s site.

Spirit

ACS companies recognise that teamwork, and the team spirit that powers it, is essential to the success of partnerships in business. They encourage open communications and make sure that everyone is kept involved and strive to succeed together. They do maintain high standards when dealing with others and build strong relationships with customers.

Environment

Operating in strict accordance with relevant laws, regulations and professional codes of practice, ACS achieves continual improvement in their environmental performance. They educate and train their employees to conduct their activities in an environmentally friendly way. They also work closely with regulatory bodies, environmental organisations and all other interested parties on environmental issues.

And finally

Words are only meaningful when backed up by deeds, we will be happy to prove this if you would like to try us.

The Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme can bring significant financial savings, in the short and long-term, as well as improving a company’s energy-efficiency and its impact on the environment.

An immediate cash-flow boost
An ECA provides 100% tax relief on any investment in energy-saving equipment, in the same tax year as the purchase is made. This means a business paying corporation tax at 28% will receive 28p tax relief for every £1 invested in energy-saving products.

If the equipment isn’t on the Energy Technology Product List (ETPL), or doesn’t meet the relevant criteria, the most a company can claim is 20% tax relief, which works out at only 5.6p for every £1. So, in effect, an ECA provides a cash-flow boost of 22.4p for every pound invested.

The financial benefit will be different if a company is paying income tax, or if it has a different marginal rate of corporation tax.

Another benefit of the scheme is that it reduces the payback period on the initial investment.

Lower long-term energy costs
As well as the added tax incentive, investing in energy-saving equipment could reduce a company’s energy bills, as it has lower running costs. This will also reduce a company’s Climate Change Levy (see the graph below), so there are significant long-term savings to be made from the initial investment.

Enhanced Capital Allowence (ECA)
